I receive the images fine but when I try to open them either through preview or save to a file I get this error

Photo gallery can't open this photo or video. The file may be unsupported, damaged or corrupted.

The test files are my own and they are none of the above. On one occasion a file was able to be opened.

I have set the file extension to both .jpg,.JPG and left it blank .. to no avail

Help please

Are you using MacMail? MacMail tends to corrupt attachments. Try downloading attachments via a web based browser, or alternate like Thunderbird.
