Hi I have one of your forms on my website, and I have even tested it a few times myself, I am finding that about 25% of the time, peoples photos are not coming through. (Even my own test ones - the test ones were under 100kb).
Is there anything I can do? I noticed that the test one I just used was called: 022.jpg Would it matter that it is called a number rather than a word?

I know the max file size is 2.5meg

My code is this:

<!-- Begin myContactForm.com Form HTML -->
<form name="contactForm" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data" action="http://www.mycontactform.com/sendform/sendform.php">
<input name="user" type="hidden" id="user" value="theminitrader" /><input name="formid" type="hidden" id="formid" value="264114" /><input name="subject" type="hidden" id="subject" value="New Ad with Photo" />

If a user is submitting a large file (2.5 mb is pretty big) over a slow connection, it can cause it to time out and lose the attachment. This however is pretty rare. The most likely situation is that the attachment is being striped by your incoming mail server, spam filters, or anti-virus software.

The attachments are being sent on our end.

Hi I have been watching very closely and do not agree that you are receiving the photos at your end as they are not attached to the messages in my 'message centre'. (If you look at my account, every single one of the messages that I use my form for should have a photo attached)

Some of the files that are not arriving are below 100kb.

I added an email address from a different server to the form to see whether or not it was my mail server (it has now been removed as it was getting annoying) but it made no difference, the attachments still were not arriving.

Attachments are never added to the Message Center. We do not store the attachments on our server.

While testing on another server is a good place to start, also look at the settings on your local computer. Both the anti-virus software you are running as well as email client can very easily strip the attachments. Most anti-virus software has a 'History' area that shows what actions have been taken.

Hello, Thankyou for taking the time to try nut out this problem Very Happy

Even though you don't hold the attachments in the Message Centre, there is information to say that a file had been attached to the email, and what the file was called (when I don't receive the attachment, there is no such information there - pls remember I have done tests and sent myself attachments with the form and some didn't make it through even though they were only 80k)

I checked the History in my antivirus (AVG Free) and although it had scanned 3600 emails, not one of them was blocked. Further on this point, when the attachment doesn't come through I send the client an email to which they reply and forward me the same file that didn't arrive.

I doubt Microsoft Outlook is blocking the attachment either as there is no notification of the blocking and the attachments are only jpegs. Anything else you can think of please post.

I have checked through thinking maybe it could be something to do with clients servers, they come from many places like:
yahoo.com hotmail.com live.com live.com.au bigpond.com aapt.net.au tpg.com.au etc

I checked and messages have come through 'properly' from these severs from other people.

Could it be something to do with the fact that I am in Australia? Or could it be something to do with the form being hosted on a Homestead site builder page?

The information about there not being any attachment information (text) within the message center is intriguing. This leads me to believe that it is somehow being blocked. It could very well be the web host that is blocking the upload. Unfortunately, it could also be a number of other issues ranging from the connection you are on, AV software, etc. Have you tried testing the form on an alternate hosting provider to see if it works?

If you could also post the location of the live form, I'll run a couple tests on it from my end and see if I can find any abnormalities.

Hi Nick,

I have been doing some testing and it seems as though anything that is larger than 2meg has a good chance of not coming through.

I noticed that one file I sent was 1.79meg when it left, then was 2meg when it arrived. Other sizes that I tested (and didn't come through with the email) were (sizes in kb) 2180, 2204, 2280, 2460, 3000. (I know the form only takes up to 2.5 meg but just tested anyway).

When I did previous tests, like I said before, the attachments were MUCH smaller. I will keep a close eye on it and keep you updated.

Is there a reason why the attachments can only be 2.5meg? Guessing it keeps your own costs down! What about if people paid extra? Its kind of annoying as camera's are super awesome now and the files just keep on getting larger.

I was doing the testing on a temporary site that I had set up with Microsoft Publisher: (suprisingly it actually worked!)

file:///C:/Users/Tricia/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/Temporary%20Internet%20Files/Content.MSO/PubWebPagePreview/pub4828.0/index.htm

Connection you are on: what do you mean? My homestead gives me 102400 MB of alloted bandwith (i have hardly used any of it), my home is high speed wireless.

AV software: anti virus? as explained earlier, I can't see a problem with it.

Have you tried testing the form on an alternate hosting provider to see if it works? yes as above.

If you could also post the location of the live form, I'll run a couple tests on it from my end and see if I can find any abnormalities. http://www.the-mini-trader.com/NewAdWithPhoto.html

Good luck, I hope you have success in finding the problem. Like I said I will keep you updated with any further emails/photos that come in.

Thank you for the reply and working with us. Upon further investigation, I have found a configuration parameter on our side that is preventing files over 2mb from getting through. I have contacted our operations people and this change should be made within the next couple of hours. This should solve the problems you are having.

You may ignore the test emails that I sent through your form.

Sincerely,

Nick Ladd

I've read through some of the other posts, but don't seem to find an answer for our issue. (I may have just missed it.)

This is the first time we have an attachment in a form, which can be seen at http://www.nrcprograms.org/site/PageNavigator/careers_application. We receive the PDF copy of submitted form successfully, but not the other attachments from the individuals testing the form.

I checked the sizes of the attachments and they were all under 200kb, so very small. I tried disabling and enabling the form, but that didn't help either. I've tried just having one attachment, then two. I also sent it to my hotmail account in addition to my work email account. I didn't try my gmail account, but don't want to keep racking up tests going through before we actually officially launch the page.

Is there anything else not mentioned on this forum yet that could be the culprit?

Thank you in advance.

Please try Gmail. I am not seeing anything that would prevent this from working on our end. The attachment fields should work. If not, it is likely either an issue with your web client not decoding a multipart message correctly (Macs sometimes have this issue) or an issue with a spam filter.

Thank you for the help, but this didn't help. I tried using gmail address as the applicant to a gmail address and also disabled the PDF attachment of the application, in case that was creating some contention for resources.

Do you have any other ideas? I would really like to include this, because the only other work around would be to email those attachments instead of using the form.

Thanks again.

Unfortunately, I am not seeing any issues on our end that would cause this. I can try to do some deeper investigation during our next development cycle, but that won't be until this coming summer.

Thank you, Nick. That would be great. For now, we'll just post an email address that they can send their resume/cover letter to as a workaround, but it would be great to have the form all-in-one.

One other thing you might try. Currently your webpage is using character set: iso-8859-1. You can see this in your website code:

Code:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

Our code using a more universally accepted UTF-8 character set. A mix-match in character sets can sometimes cause odd things to happen. Changing the above code on your site to UTF-8 might fix the problem.

Code:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
